Learn it with a Song is a series of songs and related activities that have been developed to integrate the use of music in a curriculum. The songs and activities are designed to allow collaboration between the music specialist and the classroom teacher, focused on children ages four to ten. However, the songs themselves are suitable for all ages. The related activities are in progressive order, starting with the youngest learners who are just beginning to read and write. The later activities include writing and musical arrangements for recorder.

The program is based on the assumption that music is an innate intelligence found in all humans. Therefore, if all humans possess musical intelligence, then music can be a valuable tool for learning in all areas. Learn it with a Song has a two-fold design: primarily, the songs and musical activities will teach musical skills. At the same time, the song words and non-musical activities will enhance learning in a variety of classroom subjects. The first book in the series, Learn it with a Song: Science, has been published and should be available at Leslie Music Supply in Spring 2010.

When I transitioned from music therapy to music education, I was working in preschools teaching songs and musical activities to young children. It was difficult to find songs suitable for young learners that would work in my classes. Teachers often requested songs to correspond with their curriculum topics such as dinosaurs, the seasons, etc. As a result of these teacher requests, I started composing songs that would fit with curriculum topics in science, language arts and social studies.
